hello everyone, I’m very interested in cybersecurity. I’d like to begin learning ethical hacking and pentesting, but I’m feeling a little unsure about where to start. What’s the best route a beginner can take for free without wasting time or getting off course? Any tips or resources would be really appreciated

Learn networking first, read/watch Network+ or CCNA material. If you’re serious, start with the CompTIA Trifecta (A+, Network+ and Security+). Pentesting isn’t an entry level position, these will give you strong foundations.

Net+ is a waste of time. Go straight to security+ or do some of the red team stuff on Tryhackme to see if you like it

I think the TryHackMe courses are pretty good for getting your hands dirty and getting an idea of what's out there and how it works. Without paying, I recommend looking at how security frameworks work, starting with applications using OWASP and then moving on to internal systems. You can look at how threat actors operate using Mitre Att&ck , but it won't mean much to you... Learn about the different phases of a pentest (recon, initial access, etc.) and if you can test things on virtual machines. It would take too long to give you an exhaustive explanation, but if you have any questions or want resources, you can PM me, and I'll be happy to guide you.

Learn your basics first. A+, Network+, Security+. TryHackMe has a lot of free hands on courses, there are also free courses on edX. Your local library probably has some books on the topics. Cisco is good. Look into youtubers- John Hammond, Network Chuck, Professor Messer. They cover various topics and have videos pointing you in the right direction for learning. When you can spend some money premium tryhackme and hackthebox are good. I feel like tryhackme is aimed more for beginners and hackthebox is a bit more advanced.

The first thing to do is get a flash drive and download an Iso with Kali Linux on it. Set up persistent storage on it as well. Set up a dynamic proxy chain string of 10 or so different IP VPNs. Update the Kali Repository so you have a fully decked out system. From their start googling how to use the different sets of programs with in the Kali suite. There is a huge amount of information on using these programs just on Google. Gain a fundamental understanding of the different network levels as well. On a Windows computer learn how to create you own GPT in which you can use for writing your own scripts. Learn basic Linux commands on top of that to navigate the different programs with in Kali. Once you learn a basic under standing start playing around with Black Arch suite. Get a pile of 64gb flash drives and download seperate distros on them in which you can just download and keep seperate. If you choose to do anything sketchy just know that there can be MAJOR CONSEQUENCES.

you need to start learning IT first. i wish someone told me this when i was in your shoes. LEARN NETWORKING. HARDWARE. stuff like the Comptia A+, low level comptia foundational certs and foundation knowledge. you really cannot jump into a 'hacking 101 course' without knowing at a MINUMUM, the basics of linux, networking, computers in general.you wouldnt go up to a mechanic and ask him 'hey, ive never worked on a car before in my life, but i want to start fixing Mercedes and Lamborghinis today. can you teach me?'.that would be silly, wouldnt it? same idea here. learn and build your foundation. you are young, you have so much time. i wish i was 15 again.
